Ionian Greeks colonized Marmara (ancient Prokonnessos) in the 8th century B.C. According to legend Jason and the Argonauts and visited and the island joined the war against Troy. In 493 B.C. it was burned by a Phoenician fleet fighting for Darius the Great. The Greek tyrant Metrodorus ruled the island for the Achaemenid Empire. In 410 Alcibiades conquered it for Athens. Byzantine aristocrats from Constantinople first settled on the island during the reign of Constantine the Great and by 569 many had palaces on the island. The greatest palace was built by Emperor Justinian I. With the Emperor came a large entourage of nobility, palace guards, tradesmen, and servants. Justinian also built a large convent on Marmara, among the earliest of all convents.
